The Oaks was the home of Tuskegee University’s first president, Booker T. Washington, and his family from its construction in 1900 until Margaret Murray Washington’s death in 1925. The 14-room home was constructed by students and was the first home in Macon County, AL with electricity, steam heating, and indoor plumbing. Construction of the home was funded by wealthy benefactors, including Andrew Carnegie.
